Can I claim for contraceptive medication via Extras cover?
Only if it’s been prescribed to treat a medical condition (i.e. not used as a contraceptive). And it meets the general criteria for a Pharmaceutical claim.
That’s because Extras policies (under the Private Health Insurance Act) can only provide benefits for products and services intended to manage or prevent a disease, injury or condition – which isn’t the case if taken as a form of contraceptive.
To pay your claim, we’ll need a letter from your doctor confirming that the medication is part of your treatment. You’ll also need to provide an updated letter every 24 months while you continue to claim for the medication.
