Why is Nurses & Midwives Health undertaking a merger?

At Nurses & Midwives Health, we’re committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of Australia’s nurses, midwives, and their families.

To ensure we continue to deliver on this promise and secure the long-term future of Nurses & Midwives Health, we’ve made the considered decision to merge with Teachers Health.

Together, we’ll combine our efforts to address the challenges the industry continues to face, including an ageing population and rising costs of healthcare.

What are the benefits of the merger for members?

As one health fund, we’ll combine our efforts to create operational efficiencies and, in turn, focus on what matters most – supporting our members.

Nurses & Midwives Health members will benefit from the experience and economies of scale that come with being part of Australia’s largest industry-based health fund.

Why Teachers Health?

Nurses & Midwives Health was established in 2016 by Teachers Health Fund, Australia's largest industry-based health fund, to provide nurses and midwives with comprehensive and tailored private health cover.

Like Nurses & Midwives Health, Teachers Health is part of Teachers Health Group and shares our vision of putting members at the heart of everything they do.

Teachers Health is also a not-for-profit health fund and has over 65 years’ experience supporting the health insurance needs of those dedicated to helping others.

When will the merger take effect?

The merger will take effect 1 January 2022.

Will the Nurses & Midwives Health brand remain?

Yes! While Nurses & Midwives Health and Teachers Health will officially operate as one health fund from 1 January 2022, Nurses & Midwives Health will retain its own unique identity and branding. Plus, there will be no changes to the Nurses & Midwives website or app.

The strength of the Nurses & Midwives Health brand will continue to flourish and our commitment to supporting the health insurance needs of Australia’s nurses, midwives, and their families will remain as strong as ever.

As always, we’ll continue to work closely with union partners and associations to ensure the needs of nurses and midwives are met.

My cover

How will the merger impact me?

We’re working hard to ensure the overall impact of the merger is minimal. Members will continue to receive the same dedicated support and service they’ve come to expect from Nurses & Midwives Health.

While there’ll be changes to some of the products we offer, you can rest assured there won’t be any detrimental changes to products or pricing.

In fact, it will be business-as-usual with little difference to your day-to-day interactions with us.

We’ll be in contact to provide you with another update ahead of the merger, including information regarding your cover and pricing.

Will my cover change?

This will depend on the cover you have. If your cover does change, you can rest assured that you’ll either be placed on an equivalent or higher level of cover with no increase to the price you pay.

We’ll be in contact to provide you with another update ahead of the merger, including information regarding your cover and pricing.

If I am moved to another level of cover, will any waiting periods apply?

If we move you to another level of cover as a result of the merger, waiting periods will not apply and you can access any additional services straight away.

However, if you choose to move to a new or upgraded policy, standard waiting periods will apply.

Will my premium increase?

No, there’ll be no detrimental changes to pricing resulting from the merger.

It’s important to note that premium changes occur each year (usually in April), so your premium will likely change at this time.

Can I still visit the Teachers Health Centres to access my current dental and optical network services?

Can I still access the Preferred Provider network for dental and optical?

Will I be able to submit my claims as normal after the merger?

Yes, you’ll still be able to claim and use your health cover as normal.

You’ll receive an updated membership card in the months following the merger. We’ll keep you updated to ensure we minimise any disruptions to your ability to claim via HICAPS.
